Letter to a Future Library Science Student

Dear Future Library Science Student,             First and foremost, enjoy yourself in this course! Library Science isn’t meant to be boring and stressful; have fun, and appreciate being in an learning environment that you love.             In my opinion, the most important part of Library Science is learning how to upkeep and maintain a library. A lot of work goes into running it, and you really don’t appreciate that until you get the chance to see behind the scenes. It was fascinating to see how organized and efficiently run our library is, and I think it’s very important for students to see this process.             My experience in the course mainly consisted of checking resources in and out of the library, and helping students with miscellaneous tasks. I signed the laptops/macbooks out to teachers, and helpe...

Web 2.0 - eQuiz Show

Name: eQuizShow URL: equizshow.com This website creates a "Jeopardy" style game show, and allows two teams to play against each other in a friendly competition.  I can see this web tool being used in almost every single class, because it's a great and innovative way to assess the knowledge of students, while keeping them engaged. From a student's point of view, I think it would be best used in a presentation, to quiz their peers on what they'd just talked about.  The program itself is very easy to use; you simply create 5 categories of questions, and list 5 questions under each category. The questions should be ranked similarly to Jeopardy, with the easiest question in the first slot, and the hardest in the last slot.  Sample Project:  http://equizshow.com/play/66296 Tutorial:  Choose a general topic/subject to base your quiz around, and give your quiz an appropriate name. Create 5 different categories of questions that all fit under your gen...

Library Careers

What degrees are required for a public library and for a school library? Although becoming a librarian may seem like a relatively simple task, librarians work very hard to get the position that they want. Being a librarian takes a lot of hard work and studying, and one should certainly not underestimate their local librarian. To become a public librarian, students need to complete an undergraduate program in a field of their choice. Undergraduate students are not required to study a specific major. However, keeping a fairly high GPA is important, as most employers prefer librarians that have completed a master’s degree program in general library or information science. Furthermore, some librarians decide to pursue specialized degrees, intended for specific areas of the field. On the other hand, becoming a school librarian is slightly different. The basic requirement for a school librarian is to hold a Bachelor’s Degree, and to pass any district-required library examinations. How...

3D Printing

Image
While I had done some 3D Printing in the past, this was an entirely new experience. When I took CAD/CAM/CNC 9, I simply made the design, and gave it to Ms. Desrochers to print! I was very pleased to have the opportunity to actually use the 3D printer for myself.  We initially ran into a few problems with setting up the 3D printer; for example, the filament was broken into several pieces, and lodged inside of the tube. Because of this, we had to spend a full double block trying to clear the tube! Once the tube was cleared, I had a few problems calibrating the printer. However, once I'd figured out how to properly calibrate the machine, the printing process ran very smoothly, and I ended up with the above product! This is a key chain of the popular brand "Supreme," and I am very happy with how it turned out. It was fascinating to see how the printer formed the inside of the key chain to save material, and it's truly a very interesting concept. ...

Book Shopping

Mortal Engines - Phillip Reeve: This book is the first of a futuristic quartet from British author Phillip Reeve. The books are fascinating and well written, and offer a unique and interesting take on dystopian fiction. The quartet focuses on several key issues in today's society, such as nuclear warfare, consumerism, and "survival of the fittest." Sphere - Michael Crichton: Although Sphere is a somewhat older novel, the intriguing nature of the novel is truly timeless, and is perfect for older readers who enjoy science fiction. Michael Crichton skillfully finds the perfect balance between reality and bizarre illusion, resulting in a thrilling story under the sea. Reqiuem - Lauren Oliver: Reqiuem is the third and final book in the Delirium Trilogy, and provides an exciting end to the popular trilogy. Because it takes place in a distant future where love is a disease, this book may appeal to readers of the YA genre, while still appealing to a wider audience.  7 Habits...
